Model Description
The Leica M1 was a technical M camera with an optical viewfinder but no coupled rangefinder. Its 0.72× finder provided framing for 35mm and 50mm lenses, while focusing had to be determined by scale or through auxiliary equipment such as the Visoflex. The arrangement suited copying, close-range, scientific and other work where the ordinary rangefinder mechanism was unnecessary. The M1 used the M bayonet and much of the M2 body architecture. It occupied an intermediate position between the complete M rangefinder cameras and the later MD, which omitted the finder as well.
