Model Description
The M3D was a specially prepared version of the M3 associated with LIFE photographer David Douglas Duncan. Four black-painted cameras were made for Duncan in the 1950s and equipped for rapid film advance with a Leicavit. Sixteen later commemorative cameras were produced in the same spirit, followed by the unique M3D-100 in 2016, assembled using surviving period components. In total, 21 cameras are recorded under the M3D name. The original M3Ds were working professional cameras rather than collector editions and helped inform Leica’s development of the first MP.
