Model Description
The first Leica MP was developed from the M3 for professional press photography and introduced in 1956. It was equipped for the Leicavit rapid winder, allowing film to be advanced from beneath the camera. Differences from the ordinary M3 included a manually reset external frame counter and omission of the self-timer. Distribution was directed principally toward working professional photographers rather than the general consumer market. The recorded group contains only about 400 cameras. This model is unrelated in production history to the modern MP introduced in 2003, despite the repeated designation.
